september. black bursa figs, turkey
The fig, what an amazing fruit. Picked ripe from the tree, a juicy fig can send taste buds to culinary heaven! I work with a grower in the Bursa region of north-west Turkey which is blessed with some of the best fig growing conditions in the world. September is the best time of year for these beauties which are basically darker, jucier and sweeter that your 'average' fig.
The Bursa region has gained a strong reputation for export as they are able to produce a fig which unlike most, travels well. This means when it reaches us here in the UAE, instead of receiving jam (which has been known to happen when transiting through extreme temperatures) what arrives is firm, juicy fruit ready for our fruit bowls / fridges / plates.
Figs are really versatile, aside from being eaten as a hand fruit, they are fantastic accompaniments to cheese, cured meat and game.
